Today in my blog, we are talking about Reggio Emilia's method, a pedagogy that consider the child as the protagonist and with the ability to create their own knowledge that is driven by their curiosity, motivation and imagination.
The space in Reggio Emilia is organized to get children attention and provoque them to experiment with the materials and get their own conclusions. One of this materials is the light table, that consist on a surface with an illuminated base that allows pupils to experiment in sensorial way.
And how can we use the light table in geometry? There are a huge number of possibilities to apply the geometry to this material, but this time we are going to focus on directions and line formations. We will need a plastic tray, sand and worksheets that children are going to follow using their fingers to draw it in the sand.
As you can see in Figure 3, children will do lines in one direction and repeat them in the same direction. We can also add lines in different directions. In Figures 1 and 2, they are drawing concentric circles and squares, and we can also add the directions in this worksheets. The possibilities and worksheets that we can create are endless, so it is versatile material we can include in our classroom.
Moreover, in Montessori's method, another pedagogy created by María Montessori that it is also related with sensorial education, use the light table in this way to exercise the writing skills. This simple activity can help children in the knowledge of letters, seeing them as a line formation and following the directions of the letter. It would be perfect if we try first the worksheets that appear in Figures 1, 2 or 3 and then include the letters.
