Hello Geolearners! Today, the material is part of one methodology we did not talk about: Waldorf's pedagogy. Waldorf is based on practical activities and creative games, and in primary education, in the development of the artistic expression and social abilities. The main objective is to get the development of free individuals, morally responsible and integrated, with a high level of social competence.
The Waldorf material we are going to talk about is the wheel of Waldorf, (Figure 1) is a circle of wood with the number form 0 to 9 around the outline. Each number has a stick of wood in which children will put on the wool. There is also in the middle of the circle a smaller circle in which you can see the figure that the wool is creating.
One of the areas that children are working with this material is maths, due to children are counting two by two, five by five, six by six, etc. In this way, they will learn to count and also to multiply.
Another area is fine motor skills, owing to they will improve it by putting on the wool and tauten it as much as they can, this is a difficult task for children because of their ability with their hands, but they will improve it if they work on the wheel of Waldorf usually. Other subject, and the one we are more interested in this post is geometry. Each time table is creating a different figure, and the best part is that, they are creating this figure! They can see perfectly the vertex and the sides that the figure has and then, they will identify it with the circles of wood in which the figure is.
You can see an example of practice with this material to understand better how to use it in the link below Figure 1.
