Welcome to ALTERNATIVEGEOMETRY!

Hello!
I am Ana Morente and this is my new blog about geometry related to education. According to my experience, interventions and also the new information that I am learning, I am going to write about methodologies and individual activities to learn geometry.

Besides, the methodologies that I am going to write about are all of them alternative pedagogies like Montessori or Warldorf. You will know some activities that this type of center uses and therefore, you will recognize something about this methodologies if you ear about them.

I hope it will be useful for you!

12 DIVISION OF A CIRCLE - WALDORF

Hi! Today in AlternativeGeometry, I am going to explain another dynamic in Waldorf's pedagogy.   "12 division of a circle" is used in children of the third grade and also in high school. The difficulty of the composition needs ability with the compass and a geometry thinking, but if our children are able to follow the steps of the video that you can see at the end of the post, they will do it good! As you can seen Figure 1, in the firsts steps you will need a watercolor paper and also a compass and a ruler. In the video, she is drawing circles taking into account that they have to pass in the center of the paper. Then, she is joined different points to make two triangles that she use as a guide to do more circles (Figure 2). When the composition is finished, you will obtain a perfect circle composed by circles. Now, it is time to start mixing colors. By mixing colors, children will experiment and analyze with colors, knowing what are the primary colors and...

THE LIGHT TABLE - REGGIO EMILIA

Today in my blog, we are talking about Reggio Emilia's method, a pedagogy that consider the child as the protagonist and with the ability to create thei r own knowledge that is driven by their curiosity, motivation and imagination. The space in Reggio Emilia is organized to get c hildren attention and provoque them to experiment with the materials and get their own conclusions. One of this materials is the light table , that consist on a surface with an illuminated base that allows pupils to experiment in sensorial way.  And how can we use the light table in geometry? There are a huge number of possibilities to apply the geometry to this material, but this time we are going to focus on directions and line formations. We will need a plastic tray, sand and worksheets that children are going to follow using their fingers to draw it in the sand. As you can see in Figure 3, children will do lines in one directio...

PLANE FIGURES PUZZLES - MONTESSORI

Hi there! In this new post, the material is going to be one of the Montessori's method materials.  Montessori pedagogy is based on sensorial education and motor skills education to create the materials for the different "subjects". In Montessori's classrooms, children are using the materials freely and they are all working in different things.  So, the topic that we are going to expose in the didactic application is plane figures and in Montessori children use puzzles (Figure 1) and they can also use flashcards (Figures 3). As I said, sensorial and motor skills are important in Montessori's dynamics, and this is a main material to develop these skills. In Figure 1 you can see the material as you can found it in Montessori, the pupils take off one of this drawers and they can use it in different ways: 1- To do the puzzles. Children have to recognize the figure and it space to place it and do the puzzles. This activity has a variant doing it with the ...
