STRUCTURAL TRIANGLES - MONTESSORI

When children get used to geometric figures, the fact to create figures based on other figures is stimulating for our pupils and structural triangles are perfect for that! This is another material in Montessori and its function is to demonstrate that all the geometric plane figures can be building based on triangles.

This material is presented with five boxes with different shapes that contain combinations of triangles of different sizes, shapes and colors. Apart from create figures they are learning about the equivalences and its application to found the area.

The objective is to form the figure inside the boxes and join the pieces of triangles to create the shape of the box. Besides, children can choose as the objective of the activity, to form different figures with the ones that are inside the box. In this case, we will obtain the following figures that appear in Figure 2. All the figures use the colors as a clue to form the regular figures and they also have lines in order to visualize the triangles in the figure. In contrast, there is a rectangular box with blue pieces that it is used in an advanced level. In this way, to do the activity they will not have any clue to solve it.

THE LIGHT TABLE - REGGIO EMILIA

Today in my blog, we are talking about Reggio Emilia's method, a pedagogy that consider the child as the protagonist and with the ability to create thei r own knowledge that is driven by their curiosity, motivation and imagination. The space in Reggio Emilia is organized to get c hildren attention and provoque them to experiment with the materials and get their own conclusions. One of this materials is the light table , that consist on a surface with an illuminated base that allows pupils to experiment in sensorial way.  And how can we use the light table in geometry? There are a huge number of possibilities to apply the geometry to this material, but this time we are going to focus on directions and line formations. We will need a plastic tray, sand and worksheets that children are going to follow using their fingers to draw it in the sand. As you can see in Figure 3, children will do lines in one directio...

12 DIVISION OF A CIRCLE - WALDORF

Hi! Today in AlternativeGeometry, I am going to explain another dynamic in Waldorf's pedagogy.   "12 division of a circle" is used in children of the third grade and also in high school. The difficulty of the composition needs ability with the compass and a geometry thinking, but if our children are able to follow the steps of the video that you can see at the end of the post, they will do it good! As you can seen Figure 1, in the firsts steps you will need a watercolor paper and also a compass and a ruler. In the video, she is drawing circles taking into account that they have to pass in the center of the paper. Then, she is joined different points to make two triangles that she use as a guide to do more circles (Figure 2). When the composition is finished, you will obtain a perfect circle composed by circles. Now, it is time to start mixing colors. By mixing colors, children will experiment and analyze with colors, knowing what are the primary colors and...

FIGURE DRAWINGS - WALDORF

Let's continue with some Waldorf dynamics. In this post, we are using again Waldorf methodology and I mentioned in the last post, this method use artistic processes to learn in different subjects. The dynamic today is specially based on   artistic compositions made of plane figures , using chalks in a blackboard or color pencils in a paper. The activity is very creative , due to they are going to compose the figures in the position, shape and colors that they choose and the result will be unique and autonomous from each child.  The proposal is taking from Waldorf method and one woman had put it into practice a YouTube video (you can see it at the end of the post). The activity is divided in three parts:  1- In the first part, the figures are created from outside to the inside . That is to say, the figure will be not draw, but the part that is going to be colored is going to determined the outline of the figure. This process ...
