12 DIVISION OF A CIRCLE - WALDORF

Hi! Today in AlternativeGeometry, I am going to explain another dynamic in Waldorf's pedagogy.   "12 division of a circle" is used in children of the third grade and also in high school. The difficulty of the composition needs ability with the compass and a geometry thinking, but if our children are able to follow the steps of the video that you can see at the end of the post, they will do it good! As you can seen Figure 1, in the firsts steps you will need a watercolor paper and also a compass and a ruler. In the video, she is drawing circles taking into account that they have to pass in the center of the paper. Then, she is joined different points to make two triangles that she use as a guide to do more circles (Figure 2). When the composition is finished, you will obtain a perfect circle composed by circles. Now, it is time to start mixing colors. By mixing colors, children will experiment and analyze with colors, knowing what are the primary colors and...

FIGURE DRAWINGS - WALDORF

Let's continue with some Waldorf dynamics. In this post, we are using again Waldorf methodology and I mentioned in the last post, this method use artistic processes to learn in different subjects. The dynamic today is specially based on   artistic compositions made of plane figures , using chalks in a blackboard or color pencils in a paper. The activity is very creative , due to they are going to compose the figures in the position, shape and colors that they choose and the result will be unique and autonomous from each child.  The proposal is taking from Waldorf method and one woman had put it into practice a YouTube video (you can see it at the end of the post). The activity is divided in three parts:  1- In the first part, the figures are created from outside to the inside . That is to say, the figure will be not draw, but the part that is going to be colored is going to determined the outline of the figure. This process ...

THE WHEEL - WALDORF

Hello Geolearners! Today, the material is part of one methodology we did not talk about: Waldorf's pedagogy. Waldorf is based on practical activities and creative games, and in primary education, in the development of the artistic expression and social abilities. The main objective is to get the development of free individuals, morally  responsible and integrated, with a high level of social competence.  The Waldorf material we are going to talk about is the wheel of Waldorf, (Figure 1) is a circle of wood with the number form 0 to 9 around the outline. Each number has a stick of wood in which children will put on the wool. There is also in the middle of the circle a smaller circle in which you can see the figure that the wool is creating. One of the areas that children are working with this material is maths , due to children are counting two by two, five by five, six by six, etc. In this way, they will learn to count and also to  multiply. ...

GEOMETRICAL SOLIDS - MONTESSORI (2)

The principal material we are going to use for this activity is the same as in the other post. The difference is that we are going to compare this ideal objects or solids with real objects that are similar. The comparison with the reality is always important, due to the fact that they recognized real objects and ideal objects are difficult to recognize when they are not familiarized with them. In this way, they can get closer to solids and their names if they relate them with real objects. There are more that two possibilities to use this materials, but I will explain two of them: 1- We can put the solids separated and give them as in the other activity flashcards with the same solids and flashcards with their names so they have to put it the  first of the chain. Then, they will place the flashcards of objects  (Figure 1) that they recognize and that they think that are similar to the solids. We will form a chain with this flashcards. 2- The same...

GEOMETRICAL SOLIDS - MONTESSORI (1)

Hi! Today, the material we are going to use are  geometrical solids.  You can see in Figure 1 the complete material with the bases of the solids. In the same way as in other Montessori's materials, you can also use flashcards to create a different activity. With this material, the main objective is to manipulate and identify the solids by touching them, getting more and more used to the solids, their corners, vertexes... Therefore, we can appreciate in this post, two didactic applications with solids: 1- Using the bases. When children have to learn about the bases of the solids, the visual stimulation is the best one to use. In Figure 2 you can see a child choosing the solids that fit in with their bases. There is another possibility doing the activity inside out: to choose the base that fit in with the solid. They can also do it with the eyes blindfolded to improve sensorial skills. 2- Using flashcards and names. In this application, (Figure 3) ...

STRUCTURAL TRIANGLES - MONTESSORI

When children get used to geometric figures, the fact to create figures based on other figures is stimulating for our pupils and structural triangles are perfect for that! This is another material in Montessori and its function is to demonstrate that all the geometric plane figures can be building based on triangles. This material is presented with five  boxes with different shapes that contain combinations of triangles of different sizes, shapes and colors. Apart from create figures they are learning about the equivalences and its application to found the area.  The objective is to form the figure inside the boxes and join the pieces of triangles to create the shape of the box. Besides, children can choose as the objective of the activity, to form different figures with the ones that are inside the box. In this case, we will obtain the following figures that appear in Figure 2. All the figures use the colors as a clue to form the regular figu...

PLANE FIGURES PUZZLES - MONTESSORI

Hi there! In this new post, the material is going to be one of the Montessori's method materials.  Montessori pedagogy is based on sensorial education and motor skills education to create the materials for the different "subjects". In Montessori's classrooms, children are using the materials freely and they are all working in different things.  So, the topic that we are going to expose in the didactic application is plane figures and in Montessori children use puzzles (Figure 1) and they can also use flashcards (Figures 3). As I said, sensorial and motor skills are important in Montessori's dynamics, and this is a main material to develop these skills. In Figure 1 you can see the material as you can found it in Montessori, the pupils take off one of this drawers and they can use it in different ways: 1- To do the puzzles. Children have to recognize the figure and it space to place it and do the puzzles. This activity has a variant doing it with the ...

THE LIGHT TABLE - REGGIO EMILIA

Today in my blog, we are talking about Reggio Emilia's method, a pedagogy that consider the child as the protagonist and with the ability to create thei r own knowledge that is driven by their curiosity, motivation and imagination. The space in Reggio Emilia is organized to get c hildren attention and provoque them to experiment with the materials and get their own conclusions. One of this materials is the light table , that consist on a surface with an illuminated base that allows pupils to experiment in sensorial way.  And how can we use the light table in geometry? There are a huge number of possibilities to apply the geometry to this material, but this time we are going to focus on directions and line formations. We will need a plastic tray, sand and worksheets that children are going to follow using their fingers to draw it in the sand. As you can see in Figure 3, children will do lines in one directio...

Welcome to ALTERNATIVEGEOMETRY!

Hello!         I am Ana Morente and this is my new blog about geometry related to education . According to my experience, interventions and also the new information that I am learning, I am going to write about methodologies and individual activities to learn geometry.          Besides, the methodologies that I am going to write about are all of them alternative pedagogies like Montessori or Warldorf. You will know some activities that this type of center uses and therefore, you will recognize something about this methodologies if you ear about them. I hope it will be useful for you!
